J-1 Exchange Visitors and accompanying family members may be admitted to the United States for the amount of time necessary to complete their program. The applicant MUST prove the intent to return to his/her home country upon the program’s conclusion to receive the J-1 visa.
J- 1 (Exchange Visitors) are people coming temporarily to the U.S. to teach, study, lecture, observe, conduct research, consult, demonstrate specialized knowledge or skill, or receive training. All J-1 visa holders must have been physically present outside the U.S. (or Guam or the CNMI) for the two-year period immediately preceding application for a visa or for admission to the U.S. under the J-1.
